It’s enigmatic, because the people who really want to talk are often the most afraid. I see two types of people when it comes to seeking advice: those that go to their family or closest friends, and those who keep everything secret from those that are most important, preferring to reach out to acquaintances or strangers for a sense of newness and unbiasedness. The former is often a positive spiral while the latter is negative, but it can very well be the opposite if the people who are your “friends” are actually sapping your energy. When you post or reply here, I encourage you to open your mind and challenge your notions and demons. No one else can do it for you.

I have needed help with my life. In November and December, I was pretty depressed. I don’t think the internet is the best place for help. People are. People who know you, your weaknesses, and your strengths. Unfortunately, I don’t feel I got completely truthful answers from my friends when I asked about bad things about me (for improvement), but it wasn’t done with malicious intent, just to try and help me feel better about myself. I think I’m going to be depressed again soon, and I will try finding answers from friends, and most importantly, myself. Not Google.

At the end of the day, you’re in control of your destiny. “Help” can be something as small as supportive friends and discussions. So with this board, I want to foster that type of supportive environment here.

I’m glad you’re being self-reliant and going to friends offline (online discussion is always a shadow of the regular world). We live in a society with a “quick-fix” mindset, but this isn’t a quick-fix world, nor are we quick-fix people.

I don’t think it is a quick fix world. 2 months of depression isn’t quick. It’s slow. Painfully slow.
Two things should be noted though. Firstly, I talked to my friends over the computer. Not face-to-face. I can’t bring myself to put people in awkward situations, and asking someone to their face what’s wrong with you is very much an awkward situation. They don’t want to lie *or* hurt your feelings. Secondly, I feel I came out of that depression a better person. I am much less possession-oriented now. In fact, on my birthday (Early December. Actually, celebrated on the first), I asked for absolutely nothing. I don’t mean not saying I wanted something. I mean saying I didn’t want something. Two months of self-reflection can very potentially improve a person.

Definitely. What I meant, is that I see people generally working with a materialistic mindset, and they too often extend it to the intangible. Like people thinking that a new car or faster computer will automatically make them more productive and happy. Or people focusing on

It depends on what life help I need….do I want to adopt a dog or change careers or am I suicidal….that is a vague question but I would have to say everyone pretty much starts with the internet and then goes from there…depending on if they got the information they needed or if they liked or disliked the answer.
I am not saying that the internet should take the place of people communication but a lot of times the answers are unbiased with computers….just my opinion and I know everyone has one!

Most people who read forums don’t post to them… I don’t, anyway; I’ve managed to avoid the Wordpress MU forums in developing this website, but I’ve read dozens of threads when looking to add different features. I imagine it’s even moreso with personal issues, but I wanted an open forum for it here anyway, so the people who join have a place to share.

The Internet is often a more unbiased place! People don’t make as many pre-judgments because we’re all on the same level.

It’s only the same level if you are new. The thing about the internet is that people judge you on what you allow them to. Otherwise, in your case, Richard, everyone is of half-asian decent (sorry if I’ve got that wrong. If I am, we’ll adjust it to my quarter-asian), 16 (15 for me), in college (high school for me), and enjoys photography (photomanip for me)(I’M LESS OF EVERYTHING!! :P)

There is no way to judge someone on how they act over the computer. For positive, you get a chance to take as much time as you want thinking about your response. You can change what you said. You get more chances.
For negative, you can lie very easily online. You are what you say you are. I am a 21 year old living in California. I have 2 part time jobs, which I balance out with college. I live in a 3 story house in a gated community.
But I’m not. It’s not as much unbiased (the internet) as uninformed.

True enough, all those things are true about me too. But I do believe dishonesty over the Internet happens less than people think. Most people are telling the truth; it’s too much work to keep up with a story, and people want to connect with others as themselves, not a fake version of themselves. That’s why I dare to use my real name everywhere.
