Have you heard about the admin's recent proposal to eliminate the Visual Arts / Digital Media programs altogether? These programs prepare students for careers in graphic design, web design, television production, and much, much more. Something doesn't sit right considering that these students account for 10% of the college's total enrollment. There are over 300 students enrolled in these programs! Why on Earth would the President propose such a thing?

Lot's of documentation available regarding this, if interested, please send along an email address to contact you directly.

This puts me firmly out of the category of geekiness... The game I play is the game of life, and the gadgets I collect are inexpensive, useful, and efficient. The closest thing to a game on my computer is Adobe Photoshop, but I just edit photos with it.

What criteria do you have for geekdom?

They do make it confusing, I know. Here's what to do:

1. Go to class.daytonastate.edu.
2. Enter your user name as first initial, last name, last three digits of student ID. Mine is rthripp658, for example.
3. Enter your password. I think this is your Falconmail password. Use the Forgot Password link if you need to, and the system will email your password to your Falconmail account.

And to log in to your Falconnet account, click the "Falconnet" button at the top of the daytonastate.edu home page, log-in with your Student ID and password as birth date (081791, for example), click the big "Check Email" button toward the top-right, click "Continue...", and finally, click "Inbox." Too many steps, I know.

Once you're in at class.daytonastate.edu, there are even more steps. Under "My Courses," you may have to click the little plus sign to the right of "FA08" (for Fall 2008) to get your course list to appear. Then, click the course you want to go to in the list. Then you're at the course home page, where everything happens. There should be links at the top-left, below the college logo, which may say "Content Discussions Links Quizzes" (it varies by course). "Content" is where all the class material will be; mandatory reading, study guides, etc. Discussions are private, online forums for the class students. Participation is often mandatory; check the home page or Content pages to find out. "Links" are just links to other online resources. "Quizzes" aren't just quizzes; they're where you'll be taking all your full-blown exams.

Good luck with your course, and let me know if you need help with anything else. Check out my article, How to Ace a Daytona State Online Exam; I've written some good tips there.

I'm starting to like the new name, but it does sound a bit like a prison. Anything with "state" in it does. Daytona College would be better, but it's taken unfortunately.

The daytonastate.edu domain name bothers me. dsc.edu would be nice and short, though less descriptive. Our email addresses are really long too, what with the whole @falconmail.daytonastate.edu thing. Why can't we just be @daytonastate.edu? The student email addresses don't even have the same format as faculty (first_last name vs. last_first-initial).

I'm working on moving my photography website at richardxthripp.thripp.com over to the thripp.com network, so I have to make a few changes to accomodate the features I use over there. Plugins have been moved to a sub-menu, Manage > PLUGINS, since I'm using Plugin Commander's permissions system and that's what it does.

So for now, you can't use the time zone tool that appeared under the old top-level Plugins menu, which I blogged here. You can still change it by clicking "Settings." I also put the drop-down CSS menus in the admin section under user control, which you can de-activate (if you wish) under the same menu (Manage > PLUGINS). If you run into any problems with it, try turning it off.

I removed the Twitter Tools plugin, since it doesn't work with Wordpress MU (tried it myself, everything works but it wouldn't pick up my Twitter tweets). Also, the Advanced Category Excluder plugin is gone for now, since it doesn't work right. Sorry for that. No one tried to use either, anyway.

I made a fix to WP-o-Matic. If you have it activated, it won't let you access the plugins menu or its menus in Internet Explorer. I just commented out these lines in the code:

if (isset($_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT']) && (strpos($_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT'], 'MSIE') !== false))
die('Please switch to Firefox / Safari');

It works fine in Internet Explorer, so I don't know the reason the exclude IE users. I took out the "Browse Happy" plug that appears in the administrative section by default in Wordpress MU (read here). I don't get this discrimination against Internet Explorer, or software that forces that attitude on us. How is that any better than Microsoft trying to force Internet Explorer on us?

It's only the same level if you are new. The thing about the internet is that people judge you on what you allow them to. Otherwise, in your case, Richard, everyone is of half-asian decent (sorry if I've got that wrong. If I am, we'll adjust it to my quarter-asian), 16 (15 for me), in college (high school for me), and enjoys photography (photomanip for me)(I'M LESS OF EVERYTHING!! :P)

There is no way to judge someone on how they act over the computer. For positive, you get a chance to take as much time as you want thinking about your response. You can change what you said. You get more chances.
For negative, you can lie very easily online. You are what you say you are. I am a 21 year old living in California. I have 2 part time jobs, which I balance out with college. I live in a 3 story house in a gated community.
But I'm not. It's not as much unbiased (the internet) as uninformed.

Most people who read forums don't post to them... I don't, anyway; I've managed to avoid the Wordpress MU forums in developing this website, but I've read dozens of threads when looking to add different features. I imagine it's even moreso with personal issues, but I wanted an open forum for it here anyway, so the people who join have a place to share.

The Internet is often a more unbiased place! People don't make as many pre-judgments because we're all on the same level.
